Willard Robert Benfield

Lenoir, NC- Mr. Willard Robert Benfield, age 93, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Burke County on September 30, 1920 to the late Reverend H.S. Benfield, Sr. and Lela Baker Benfield. He was married to Sue McCrary Benfield of the residence. Mr. Benfield was a former manager for Thrift Food Center and Harris-Teeter. He was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. After retirement, Mr. Benfield worked at Wal-Mart for more than 20 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ofie Smith and Floy McCollum; brothers, William Arntz Benfield, Carl Benfield, Knolan Benfield, Cecil Benfield, Emory Benfield, and H.S. Benfield, Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Judy Allen Benfield. Other than his wife, he is survived by his son, Robert D.Benfield(Bob); daughter, Brenda Sue Bentley and husband, Gerald; grandchildren, Robert D. Benfield; Shannon Woodruff; Gerald Bentley; and Suzy Plyler; 10 great-grand-children; and lots of special nieces and nephews. A celebration of Mr. Benfield̢۪s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Monday, February 17, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Bert Blackburn officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Robert D. Benfield II, Gerald Bentley, Jr., Robert D. Benfield III, Jonathan Benfield, Austin Woodruff, Will Plyler, Drew Plyler, and Tyler Bentley. Honorary Pallbearers are Bentley Plyler, Felix Hart and Weyburn Smith. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 16, 2014 in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service from 4:00 until 6:00 PM.
