Seldon Sharon Gladden was born November 22, 1943 in Marion, NC to Dr. William M. Gladden, Jr. and Barbara Ann Cooper Gladden. She was preceded in death by her parents and a younger brother, Rob Gladden Seldon lived for music. She played clarinet during her years of high school in the Lenoir High School Band. She continued to play her chosen instrument throughout her life, eventually expanding her love to guitar, hammered dulcimer, ukulele and finally banjo. She had several banjos including one that she had custom made for her, a parlor banjo and last but not least, a banjolele. She played in the Watauga Community Band, the Banjo Buddies, handbells at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone and a small church band. Her other loves were her children, her dogs, hiking and her sister. She had many four-legged friends over the years but by far, her favorite was Dolly, a rescue that she adored. Dolly has been a great comfort to her, lying by her side as she dealt with the after effects of the chemo and dialysis. When she would get together with her sister, Rhonda, and her cousin, Mary, they would sing “Hello Dolly”. Seldon was affectionately called the “Energizer Bunny” for her never-ending energy while hiking all over the mountains in search of waterfalls and nature. She found a deep comfort in the natural surroundings that she experienced on these hikes. Seldon was a humble, gentle soul that only wished the best for everyone. Many in the music communities of Boone got to know, love and respect her. She was a very private person but had a dry wit which she occasionally blessed you with. Seldon is survived by her children, Jan M. Cooper (Chip) of Zebulon, NC and John M. Mullis (Lucy) of Charlotte, NC; a brother, William M. Gladden III (Judy) of Raleigh, NC and a sister, Rhonda E. Gladden of Boone, NC; several grandchildren and her dogs, Sam and Dolly. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Watauga Humane Society or to your favorite local rescue. In memory of Seldon, please take the time to walk in nature, listen to its music, feed the birds and squirrels, rescue a dog and enjoy life.
