Mr. John Lawson Story, Sr., age 83, went home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, September 25, 2013. He was born in Rocky Mount, NC on February 7, 1930 and had been a resident of Lenoir, NC for 42 years. John attended Shelby High School and Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC playing trumpet in the band for all four years. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1952 with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at state, he played soccer and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, the Honor Council, the Drum and Bugle Crops, and Arnold Air Society.  After graduating he joined the Air Force serving in the 4710th defense wing as an aircraft controller. He retired Major Story from the Air Force Reserves many years later. John was employed by Continental Insurance in Charlotte, NC and was “subject to transfer†moving frequently with his family to meet the company’s needs. He moved to Lenoir in 1971 and owned Reliable Insurance Agency on Pennton Avenue for over 30 years. John is survived by Shirley Story, Lynn and Michael Downham, John Lawson Story, Jr., Larry and Gail Story, and his grandchildren, Kyle, Kara, Caleb, Justin, and Bobbie Jo. Also, John is preceded in death by his wife Patti Story and survived by her daughter Teresa and Darron Summers and grandchildren Jordan and Jake. Services will be held on Friday, September 27, 2013 at the Worship Center at Bethel Colony of Mercy at 3:30 PM. Interment will follow the service in Blue Ridge Memorial Park with Military Honors. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:30 to 3:30 at the church. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Paralyzed Veterans of America in John’s name.
