Helen Johanna Niewerth Mcallen

Helen J. McAllen, 94, of Lenoir, North Carolina passed away peacefully on September 8, 2012 at Caldwell County Hospice and Palliative Care. The second of four children, Helen was born on July 12, 1918 in Baltimore, MD to Arthur and Ida Niewerth. Helen was married to the love of her life, Milton Rudolph McAllen on Sept.13, 1940. Mom-Mom, as she was affectionately known by her family, was a devoted mother to four daughters, Carla M. Schwartz (Robert) of York, PA, Linda J. McDonald (the late Lt. Col. James A. McDonald) of Summerville, SC, Susan M. Wyatt (Richard) of Birmingham, AL, and Amy E. Taggart (Michael) of Lenoir, NC. She took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren, Fred (Lisa), Michael (Jodi), Emilie (Wendy), Jennifer (David), Todd (Kim), Julie, Craig, Natalie (Bryan), Lauren (Kevin), Hannah (Brandon), Jonathan (Katie), Grant, Elizabeth and her 27 great grandchildren. She was also blessed with many wonderful friends including Lillie Osborne and The Mary Martha Sunday School Class at Lower Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband Milton R McAllen, who died in 1974, as well as her brother, Arthur and sisters, Dorothy and Irma and her son-in-law, Lt. Col. James A McDonald. Helen will be missed by her many friends at Koinonia Apartments where she has lived for the past 6 years. Helen lived her life as a devout Christian and was an active member of Lower Creek Baptist Church in Lenoir. As the matriarch of her large family, she leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and commitment to God and her family. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2012, 11 am at Lower Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service in the fellowship hall at the church located at 633 Lower Creek Dr. in Lenoir.
