Billie Claire Hendrix

Billie Claire Hendrix (nee Smith), 88 years of age,died peacefully at her family home in Lenoir on Saturday, September 16, 2017, attended by her beloved son and tireless care-giver, Charles Brian Smith.Mrs. Hendrix, born January 19, 1929, was the daughter of the late Mr. William C. Smith and Mrs. Athel Stallings Smith, life-long residents of Caldwell County.She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carter Vincent Hendrix, formerly of Lenoir, and two sisters, Mrs. Anne Lewis Pipes of Lenoir and Mrs. Martha Nell Brakefield of Morganton.She is survived by her two sons and their families, Charles Brian Smith of Lenoir, Dr. William Stallings Smith and wife Dr. Jadwiga Smith of Bridgewater, Massachusetts.“Grandma Billie” was especially proud of her two beloved grandsons, Jan Stallings Smith of Waltham, Massachusetts and Alexander William Stallings Smith of Bridgewater, Massachusetts.She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, who include Mr. John E. Black of Greensboro, Mrs. Angela Russell of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Suzanne Hall of Lenoir. Mrs. Hendrix will be remembered first and foremost as a lover of her family, an avid gardener, a bird watcher, a cat enthusiast, and a wonderful Southern cook and baker, who always exhibited sweetness and generosity to friends and family. She will be missed by all who knew her. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 22 at Clarke’s Chapel Cemetery, located at 3212 Clarks Chapel Road in Lenoir, conducted by Dr. Charles Brawley of College Avenue; Mrs. Hendrix was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church.
