Mr. William Harrington (“Mike”) Maynard, Jr. of Lenoir, NC, died peacefully at Caldwell Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 2, following an acute illness and several months of failing health. His loving companion, Rebecca Adderholdt was by his side.In addition to Ms. Adderholdt, Mike is survived by his son, Matthew Harrington Maynard and his wife, Kathryn of Huntersville, NC; his daughter Kathryn Maynard Brender a’ Brandis, and her husband Darwin, and their son Liam Quayde of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by his brother, Steve Maynard and his wife Patricia of Blowing Rock, NC; his niece, Kimberly Carson, her husband Jim, and their son, Shankara and daughter, Grace of Portland, OR; his niece, Erin Johnson, her husband Ken, and their daughters, Bergen and Bella, of Raleigh, NC; and his beloved dog, Spike. Mike was the son of William H. (“Bill”) Maynard and Patricia Tweed Maynard of Lenoir, NC.He graduated from Lenoir High School in 1961, where he was a member of the football team. He attended college at UNC Chapel Hill, UNCC, and East Tennessee State.Mike served his country in the National Guard Reserves and afterward established a successful insurance business in Charlotte, NC, and co-owned an insurance agency in St. Croix, USVI. An avid deep-sea fisherman, he was co-owner of the Holden Beach Marina. He enjoyed golf and sports on TV, and was a die-hard Duke fan. As an integral part of the Cedar Rock community, where he resided and where he loved to socialize with his fellow villagers, Mike's outgoing and extroverted personality earned him the nickname "L.P." although he was anything but "Low Profile". Mike had a generous heart and was involved in several community projects. He was instrumental in helping establish a no-kill animal shelter in Caldwell County and he served on the Caldwell Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and the Caldwell County Arts Council.He would frequently display random acts of kindness and generosity and was always willing to help the less fortunate. He loved spending time with his family and was extremely proud of his children and grandchild. A memorial service will be held at a later time.
