Lenoir, NC- Verna Honeycutt Jenkins, age 92, of Lenoir, died Tuesday afternoon, September 13, 2011, in Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Born October 26, 1918 in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late George Haywood and Nancy Smith Honeycutt and the wife of Dr. Willard Lee Jenkins. At the time of her husband’s death, Dr. and Mrs. Jenkins had been married for 69 years. Other than her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James Bayne Honeycutt, David Wilbur Honeycutt, George Haywood Honeycutt, Jr., and her sisters Gracie Leland Tilly, Hazel Celeste Benfield, and Dorothy Ethel Seagle. Mrs. Jenkins was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church, Lenoir, North Carolina. She was a faithful pastor’s wife and co-laborer with her husband in his pastorates over a period of some 48 years. She was heavily involved with church mission’s organizations, especially the Women’s Missionary Union. She taught many Sunday School classes. She was usually the church secretary, and she loved singing in the church choir. She had the gift of hospitality. She was a good conversationalist. She enjoyed playing the card game UNO. She also enjoyed making and selling Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. Surviving are two sons, James Alan Jenkins of Lenoir, David Morgan Jenkins and wife Donna of Hudson. Her grandchildren are Deanna Lynn Nichols, serving as a missionary in Manila, Philippines; Kimberly Ann Craig of Everett, WA; Michael David Jenkins, senior at Appalachian State University; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Doris and her husband Ralph Hall; Antha Thomas; Betty Kennedy; all of Lenoir; and sister-in-law June Honeycutt of Granite Falls. Also surviving are nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Mrs. Jenkins will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, September 16, 2011 in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Dr. Chuck Brawley and Reverend Robert Livingston officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2, one hour prior to the service at Evans Funeral Service.
