Thelma Hawkins

August 25, 1929 — January 20, 2025

Thelma Louise Griffin Hawkins joined the Church Triumphant at the age of 95, on January 20, 2025, surrounded by her family, and her Shaire Center Family. Thelma was born in Clover, South Carolina on August 25, 1929 to the late Samantha Elrod Griffin and John Franklin Griffin.

Thelma was preceded  in death by her husband of 69 Years, James Keyner (Whitey) Hawkins. Other than her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, a twin sister at birth, another sister, Margie Griffin McGee, brothers Tom Griffin, Frank Griffin, as well as other close family members.   She is survived by her son, James Franklin Hawkins (Cheryl), daughter, Ann Hawkins Gilley (Graham), granddaughter, Michelle Hawkins (Paul Wilarski), grandson, Ethan Kirk Gilley (Rachel Greene), special nieces, Diane Griffin Arnold (Gordon) Tommie Griffin Saunders (Teddy), Linda McGee Selby, and Sherry McGee Minshew (Rick).  Thelma also leaves behind other loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Thelma was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hudson and dearly loved her church family.  She devoted many years of her life to her family, church and community.  Thelma served as a volunteer for several local organizations, including the Cedar Rock Garden Club, Queen of Spades Garden Club, the Heart Association, and the Cancer Society.  She was also a recipient of the Hudson Woman of the Year award.  Thelma’s most enjoyable years were spent, actively involved in the Lenoir and Cedar Rock Golf Associations.  She enjoyed traveling with her friends and winning numerous trophies.  Thelma also ran The Golf Green golfing supply store in downtown Lenoir for many years.

A graveside service for Thelma and her beloved husband, Whitey, will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery in Lenoir on a date to be determined, followed by a celebration of life at the home of Graham and Ann Gilley.   In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Amorem, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC  28645, or a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to family and friends, St. John’s Lutheran Church family, Sarah Eckerd and the staff of Caregivers by Design, Amorem, and our Shaire Center Family.   The Peace Which Passeth All Understanding (Philippians 4:7)
