Thelma Key Burton

Lenoir, NC – Mrs. Thelma Joann Key Burton, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, with her children by her side, after a short period of declining health. Born November 14, 1941 she is the daughter of Mattie Key and the late Raymond Victor Key of Lenoir. Thelma was a strong believer in Christ, faithful servant and true child of God. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, homemaker, and friend. She was a proud life-time member of Pisgah Baptist Church where she was pianist for over 50 years. Thelma volunteered countless hours in various organizations throughout the county. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her infant brother, Marvin R. Key and infant grandchild, Alexander Burton. Other than her mother, she is survived by her husband, Luther Eldridge Burton; daughter, Dawn Burton Shuford and husband, Todd of Hickory; son, Scott Burton and wife, Shannon of Collettsville; sister, Gail Perkins and husband, Terry of Lenoir; brothers, Raymond D. Key and wife, Carol of Kernersville and Reese Allen Key of Lenoir; grandchildren, Starla McDaniel of Hildebran and Dustin Icenhour of Hudson; great-grandchild, Bryson McDaniel; and numerous other relatives. A celebration of life service will be held at Pisgah Baptist Church on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 1:00 with Reverend Ronnie Miller officiating. Pastor Horace Minton, Pastor Raymond Coffey and friend, Tommy Coffey will be assisting with the service. Interment will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Todd Shuford, Dustin Icenhour, Joel Icenhour, Jonathan McDaniel, James Tackett, and Jeff Sigmon. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 prior to the service.
