She is survived by her daughter Sandra L. Fox and husband Roger Fox of Charleston, SC and son Thomas Laney Jr. and wife Ingrid Laney of Hickory, NC.  Surviving grandchildren Jason Fox and wife Erin of Tampa, FL, Katie Fox and Beth Fox of Charleston, SC and Ashley Laney, Morgan Laney, and Brenna Laney of Hickory, NC and great-grandchild Madeline Fox of Tampa, FL.  Surviving siblings are Rebecca Adderholdt and Kathy McAteer of Lenoir, NC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Born on November 11, 1938 to J. Wade and MarySue Mackie Kincaid, Susan grew up in Caldwell County, the 6th of 10 children.  She graduated Hudson High School in 1957, an active participant and lover of all sports, especially basketball.

Soon after high school, she married her high school sweetheart Tommy.  They were married for 49 years until his death in 2007.  They had 3 children together – Sandra, Tommy Jr., and Victor. They enjoyed traveling and camping as a family, and Tommy and Susan loved spending time together dancing.  They were loyal and active members at Philadelphia Lutheran Church in Granite Falls.

Susan worked for many years as the credit manager for Kincaid Furniture before deciding to go back to school.  She was a life-long learner who went on to earn 3 advanced degrees.  She had earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing, Master’s Degree in Psychology, and a Master’s Degree in Music.  She retired from Catawba Valley Medical Center as a psychiatric clinical nurse after many years.  After her retirement from CVMC, she became a clinical psychiatric nursing instructor for Lenoir Rhyne University.  She loved teaching and helping new nurses into the profession.  Susan stopped teaching to care for her husband during his illness.  After Tommy Sr passed away, she decided she wanted to see the world and embarked on a four month around-the-world cruise.  She was always up for an adventure and loved to travel, especially when she could share the journey with her family.  Susan was able to visit six of the seven continents, missing only Antarctica.  She is remembered as an avid reader with a generous heart and quick-witted humor.  Fiercely independent and strong, she left a lasting impression on all the people who were lucky enough to know her.  She taught us to make the best of any situation, look for the positives, and always “go with the flow.”

Family will be receiving on December 02, 2023 from 11am – 12pm at Evans Funeral Home with a graveside service following at Blue Ridge Memorial Park, both in Lenoir, NC.
