Sidney Louis Gaskins

Lenoir, NC- Mr. Sidney Louis Gaskins, age 80, of Lenoir, passed away Monday, September 14, 2015 at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital.Born October 9, 1934 in New Bern, NC, he was a son of the late Adam and Dolly Easton Gaskins. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Logan Gaskins, two brothers, Freeman and Mark Gaskins and two sisters, Reba Bell and Ester Sarkasian. Mr. Gaskins was a member of Littlejohn United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.He had received his bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and his master’s degree from Duke University.He taught science at West Caldwell High School, Ashley High School in Gastonia and South Mecklenburg in Charlotte. He had served as the Republican County Chairman and served on the NC State Textbook Commission.He was a member of the Gamewell Ruritan Club where he had served in several positions.He enjoyed working with his donkeys and as a bee keeper. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandy Gaskins; six children, Rita Gaskins Danford and husband Jeff of Durham; Barry Dean Gaskins and wife Holly of Garner; Gary “Knocker” Gaskins and wife Laura of Asheboro; Sidney Louis Gaskins, Jr. and wife Tina of Lenoir; Carla Gaskins Schneider and husband Doug of Morristown, TN; Sandra Gaskins Booth and husband Josh of Raleigh; one brother, Oliver Gaskins of Spartanburg, SC; two sisters, Libby Jane Edwards of Lenoir; Gracie Montanni and husband Rocco of Tucson, AZ and 26 grandchildren. A celebration of Mr. Gaskins’ life will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, September 18, 2015 at Littlejohn United Methodist Church with Reverend Ross O’Neal officiating.Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 PM at Evans Funeral Service.
