Shirrell Cheek

Shirrell Levi Cheek, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Glenbridge Health & Rehab in Boone. He was born in Ashe County on March 20, 1937 to the late Levi and Helen Shirley Cheek and was formerly from Lenoir.

Shirrell was a veteran of the United States Army where he began what became his life- long career as a truck driver. Many of his friends knew him by his CB handle, “Son of a Gun”.  He loved music, particularly country music, and in his earlier days he enjoyed dancing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his late wives, Barbara and Louise Cheek; six brothers and four sisters.

Shirrell is survived by his daughter, Monica Effler; step-daughters. Cathy Riddle and Sharon Messer; sister, Grace Gentry; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and other family members.

A celebration of Shirrell’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at 3:00 PM. Burial will immediately follow the service at Laurel Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 prior to the service.
