Shirley Stanbery Woodring Smith was met by her heavenly father and reunited with many loved ones on May 28, 2023. She was born June 1, 1937 in Watauga County to Glenn and Vanna Miller Stanbery.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Smith; former husband and father of her children, Grady Woodring; sons, Kurt Woodring and Mark Woodring; grandson, Brian McLean; sisters, Edith Schieder and June Parks; brothers, Steve Stanbery and Alvin Stanbery.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Rachel W. Saunders and husband, John; Jacqueline Woodring; daughter-in-law, Annette Woodring; sisters, Glenna Hollar and husband, A.C. of Boone; Rose Freeman of Springfield, MO; sisters-in-law, Judy Stanbery, Betty Jo Stanbery, and Elaine Eller and husband, Jim; brother-in-law, Tim Smith and wife, Lucy; 8 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Shirley had worked in hosiery as an inspector and then as a cashier at Red &White while living in Charleston, S.C. After retirement, she was employed at Smokey Creek BBQ.
She loved God, family and friends and was a woman who relied heavily on her faith. She enjoyed her Happy Hearts Sunday School Class and was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. Shirley was known as the lady with the beautiful smile. Family and friends loved her light and fluffy homemade biscuits, raw apple cake and cole slaw. She enjoyed reading and watching the birds. For many years, Shirley enjoyed yearly trips with her sisters and nieces. She loved and appreciated being doted on by Cecil, and he did it exceptionately well.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at Union Grove Baptist Church, 1808 Union Grove Road, Lenoir, NC 28645, on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 12:00 PM with Pastor Sam Craven officiating. Burial will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 12:00 prior to the service.
