Scott Torrence

William Scott Torrence, age 80, passed away Monday, August 13, 2018 at The Shaire Center. He was born on April 25, 1938 in Lenoir, NC to the late Andrew Frie Torrence and Lucille Coffey Torrence. Taking over from his father, Scott and his brother Andrew ran Torrence Service Station for 35 years. A gathering place in Lenoir, over the years ‘Torrence’s’ welcomed home soldiers from war, provided an environment to catch up on the latest happenings around town, hosted friendly pool tournaments, and offered ‘penny’ candy to children.Scott was a graduate of Lenoir High School and attended Mars Hill College where he played tennis. He also was a ping pong champion and was an ace on his bowling league. Scott loved watching sports as well. He was a fan of American Legion baseball, Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco Giants.Over the years he was a big supporter of his brother and son during their baseball careers giving him much pleasure. Scott was an avid reader and had a deep love for his family and friends. He enjoyed reminiscing about the ‘good old days’ and spending time with his sisters and brother, nephews and nieces. Scott’s most important role in life was that of a father. He adored his children and they him. Scott was preceded in death by his brother in law, Dr. Paul Hedrick. He is survived by his daughter Donna and her husband Emmanuel; son Michael and his wife Bonnie; sister Becky Hedrick; sister Judy Shedden and her husband John; brother Andrew and his wife Dixie. He was also blessed with many nieces and nephews. Even as he dealt with the effects of a stroke, Scott had a witty sense of humor and remained the patriarch of the family. The family would like to recognize the love and care that was provided to Scott from The Shaire Center. Both the staff and residents became extended family. The family would also like to acknowledge the love and friendship of the Ashley family. A memorial service celebrating Scott’s life will be held in the chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Friday, August 17, 2018 at 2:00 pm with Reverend Bonnie Torrence officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 prior to the service. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Caldwell Heritage Museum, 112 Vaiden St,. Lenoir, NC 28645 or to Caldwell Hospice, 902 Kirkwood St., Lenoir, NC 28645.
