Mr. Sam Austin Hartley, age 86, of Lenoir, passed away following a short illness on Monday, January 19, 2015, at the Caldwell Hospice William E. Stevens, Jr., Patient Care Unit at Kirkwood. Born August 7, 1928 in Lenoir NC, he was the son of the late Samuel Finley and Nellie Beulah (Austin) Hartley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Helen Lorraine (Hartley) Norment. Mr. Hartley loved his family who carry on his fine legacy.His wife of nearly 62 years, Jenny (Virginia Ann Courtney Hartley) and his children, Robey and his wife Teresa; and Finley and his wife Theresa, as well as Sam’s beloved grandchildren, Robey’s children, Drew and wife Alicia, Colin, and Courtney; and Finley’s children, Jessica and Dale. Mr. Hartley was raised on what is now West Avenue and worked at McNairy’s Drug Store as a young teen. Later, while attending Lenoir High School, he worked at Lenoir Roofing. Following high school he served in the US Army in Korea. Upon his return, he attended Lenoir-Rhyne College. He married Virginia Ann Courtney on October 17, 1953. Mr. Hartley was an insurance claims adjuster, first independently and then later for Gay & Taylor Insurance. Mr. Hartley will be remembered as a capable outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family. He was a former leader of the local Quail Unlimited. Mr. Hartley faithfully worshiped at the First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir where he served as a deacon. A service celebrating Mr. Hartley’s life will be held at 4:00 o’clock, Friday, January 23, 2015 in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir. The family will receive friends following the service. A private burial will take place at Belleview Cemetery.
