Lenoir, NC- Robert Alexander Kent, Jr., passed away at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem on June 12, 2009. He was born in Caldwell County April 20, 1934, to the late Robert A. Kent, Sr. and Zella Anderson Kent. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Roberta K. Bare, Anne K. Hickman, Ruby K. Lamkin and Virginia K. Oxford and two brothers, William F. Kent, Sr. and James C. Kent, Sr., and daughter-in-law, Katharine H. Kent. Mr. Kent is survived by his wife, Elaine Allen Kent, daughters, Lynn K. Lowther and husband Jim of Fort Worth, Texas, Donna K. Barlow and husband Tim of Lenoir, and son, Robert A. Kent, III of Lenoir. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Kent Barlow of Chapel Hill, Katie Barlow of Lenoir, Robbie Kent, Andrew Kent and Claire Kent of Lenoir. He is further survived by one brother, Horry M. Kent, Sr., three sisters, Lilliam K. Setzer, Elizabeth K. Heltzer of Lenoir and Julia K. Watkins of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Mr. Kent graduated from Gamewell High School and Draughon̢۪s Business College in Winston-Salem. After graduation from Draughons, he began his career in transportation with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad for which he worked throughout the country until he decided to return to Lenoir to live and educate his children. In 1969 he became a licensed stock broker and opened and managed an office in Lenoir which later evolved into Interstate Securities and is now Wells Fargo Advisors. Mr. Kent served as a Caldwell County Commissioner from 1972 to 1979. He was very active in all phases of programs for young people. He served as a baseball coach for many years in the Little League for the Whitnel Optimist Club and Jaycee sponsored basketball team. He was a former Director of the young people̢۪s department at College Avenue Baptist Church. He was a member of the Preferred Investment Group and Lower Creek Investment club. He was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church where he has served on the board of deacons and was a long time member of the adult choir, Joy Group and numerous church committees. A celebration of Mr. Kent̢۪s life will be held at College Avenue Baptist Church in Lenoir on Monday, June 15, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. conducted by Reverend David Kent and Dr. Earl Davis. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary of College Avenue Baptist Church on Sunday, June 14, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:30 PM. Serving as pallbearers will be Horry Kent, Jr., Mikeal Kent, Heath Kent, Bill Kent, Jr., Jim Kent, Jr., Jim Setzer and Ben Rich.
