Ricky James Garland, 59, of Lenoir, died July 27, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Mr. Garland was born in Mitchell County on July 28, 1953 and spent his early years in Bakersville with his beloved grandparents, Len and Alice Burleson. Mr. Garland enjoyed several careers in his life: he was a long haul truck driver, a millwright, and a mechanic. He had a great sense of humor and a quick wit, and liked to affectionately tease his family. He kept an immaculate garage, and loved collecting and restoring old cars. He was a member of the Route 66 car club for many years. He loved animals and often took in abandoned cats and dogs. He will be greatly missed by his Jack Russell terrier, Ozzie. But what he loved most was being a Paw-Paw. He is survived by six beautiful grandchildren who meant the world to him: Stacie, Cara, Emma, Sadie, Riley, and Cooper. Mr. Garland is also survived by his wife of 39 years, Katie Dugger Garland, of Lenoir; son, Rickey Garland and his wife, Beth, of Hampstead, NC; daughter Rebecca Harris and her husband, Brandon, of Hildebran; uncle JD Burleson of Roan Mountain, TN; and aunt Sue Honeycutt of Buladean, NC. In addition to his grandparents, he is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Louise Slagle. The visitation will be held on July 30th at Evans Funeral Home from 5-7 pm with the Revs. Doug Honeycutt, Tony Bowman, and Clyde Bumgarner officiating at the service immediately following. Interment will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Harmon Family Cemetery. Online condolences can be sent to the Garland family at www.evansfuneralservice.com.
