Lenoir, NC- Mr. Ray C. Corpening, age 72, of Lenoir, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir. Born July 3, 1941 in Caldwell County, Mr. Corpening was a son of the late James Nathaniel and Mabel Odessa Propst Corpening. Mr. Corpening had worked as a truck driver with Hickory Construction Company. He never met a stranger and was known to have a heart that was bigger than himself. He was like a big brother to many of his nieces and nephews and always was jovial and full of life. He enjoyed his 57 Chevy and loved all types of animals. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Rae Antoinette Corpening, and a brother, James Nathaniel Corpening, Jr. He is survived by a daughter, Brenda C. Smith and husband Lakel of Upper Marlboro, MD; 1 brother, Frederick Corpening and wife DeQuincy of Wilmington, DE; 4 sisters, Dorothy Kay Corpening of Washington, DC; Shirley Mae Horton of Upper Marlboro, MD; Albertine Violet Johnson and husband James of Lenoir; Mabel Odessa Crisp and husband Joseph of NJ; 4 Grandchildren, Tyshawn Thomas, Lakel Smith, Kendra Medley, Alexander Smith and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. A celebration of Mr. Corpening̢۪s life will be held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, April 26, 2014 in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Reverend James Wilfong and Reverend Jimmy Norwood officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 12:00 on Saturday, one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of David Propst, 1410 Roy Dula Place, Lenoir, NC.
