Philip Fergus Borneman

Mr. Philip Fergus Borneman, age 71, of Lenoir, passed away Monday, December 12, 2011, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Born October 27, 1940 in Lenoir, he was the son of the late Clarence Thomas Borneman and Hope Phillips Huffstetler. He spent his early childhood in Lenoir, but relocated with his family to Winchester, MA where he lived until his graduation from high school. Although he had many friends in Winchester, Lenoir was always home to him and he returned to the family home to begin his career. He worked for 16 years as office manager for Western Electronics, a distributor of Motorola radio equipment to public safety agencies throughout the region. It was this association that sparked his interest in law enforcement and led to what would become a 25-year career with the Caldwell County Sherriff’s Department, serving as Captain of the Civil Division and the Reserve Unit, and retiring in 2000. In retirement, he enjoyed recounting stories from the past, offering opinions on current events, and looking after his dogs, Dixie and Ginger, who were his constant companions. Throughout his life he chose his own way, not bowing to convention or popular sentiment. He will be missed but certainly will be remembered for his kind and caring nature, friendly disposition, and unique sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of the home; son Philip Borneman and wife Langley of Charlotte; son Shannon Borneman and wife Jennifer of Shelby; step-daughter Trena Hansen and husband Vagn of Charlotte; step-daughter Michelle Hagy and husband Chris of Lincolnton; and grandchildren Lindsay and Jonathan Borneman of Shelby. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at Evans Funeral Service from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. A private service will be held by the family at a later time.
