Philip Auton died early October 10th at Duke Medical Center. He passed peacefully while surrounded by family. Philip was born January 6th, 1965, to Linda and David, and grew up on the mean streets of Draco Road in Oak Hill, outside of Lenoir, NC. After graduating Western UNC, he moved to the less mean streets of Manhattan, where he pursued his love of acting.
Anyone who knew Philip knows he loved to perform, whether it was to a packed theater or a small group of close friends (or even a stranger). It was there in New York that he met his wife Cindy. They moved back to North Carolina where they had their daughter Maggie, his pride and joy.
Never one to stay still, Philip was a man of many places and many careers. Over the years Philip worked as a bartender, actor, restaurant manager, biscuit maker, and fabric supervisor.
If you met Philip, it’s likely you’ll never forget him. He had a big personality, big love for family and friends, big smile, big brain, big voice, and most memorably, a big heart.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, you honor Philip’s memory through any of these suggestions:
Show love to a stranger
Adopt a stray cat
Cook a new dish, no recipes allowed
Call an old friend, just to say hi
Support your local theater
Sing karaoke (loudly)
Give a donation to your favorite charity - Philip was a fan of NPR
