She was Mom to Bruce and Nancy Laney and Mark and Jan Laney. She was Grandmommy to William and Gina Laney, Olivia and Gary Morris, and Garry Laney and his fiance’ Kim Warren. She was Great-Grandmommy to Carson Ruth Laney and Nancy Watkins Laney. Survivors also include Margaret Smith, Celia Laney, and several nephews, nieces, and cousins. Mom was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College. She was an English teacher in Caldwell County for 32 years: 2 at Granite Falls High School, 28 at Lenoir High School, and 2 at Hibriten High School. Hobbies included gardening, cooking (especially desserts), cross stitch, and quilting. She enjoyed watching sports, either from the comfort of her recliner, or occasionally in person. She followed the Atlanta Braves closely, and loved the Tar Heels. She turned down the television and listened to the radio broadcast from Woody Durham and then Jones Angell. Mom loved Lower Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 70 years. She was a Sunday School teacher, Bible study leader, and Circle leader, and she wrote innumerable cards of sympathy, congratulations, and good cheer. She attended church as recently as January 31, 2016, and continued to make weekly calls to shut-ins. When an ICU nurse asked for her goals, she responded “to live so that others may see Jesus in me.” We believe she met that goal. A celebration of her life will be held at Lower Creek Baptist Church on February 20, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., with receiving following the service in the Church fellowship hall. If you would like to honor her memory, please make a contribution to Lower Creek Baptist Church, 633 Lower Creek Drive, Lenoir, NC 28645.
