Paul Anderson Shumaker Sr., 91, of Granite Falls, died Jan. 3, 2017 after a period of declining health. Born May 20, 1925, in Lenoir, NC, he was a son of the late Rev. Thomas P. and Jessie Craig Shumaker. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1943-46 during World War II. After a brief career in life insurance, Paul worked in car sales and management until his retirement. An avid golfer, he was proud of his three holes-in-one. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Hazel Duncan Shumaker, of the home; two children from a previous marriage, Steve (Beverly) Shumaker and Reggie (Randy) Hefner, both of Hickory; four children, Shirley (Ron) Kiziah of Hudson, Sandra Shumaker of Granite Falls, Sherri (Hugh) Hollar of Evans, Georgia, and Paul Shumaker Jr. (Ann) of Raleigh; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by siblings Ruby Denton, Coy Shumaker, Juanita Shumaker, Thomas Shumaker, Alvina Fox and Catherine Shumaker; stepson, James Starbuck II; grandson, Aaron Kiziah; and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive family and friends at First Baptist Church of Granite Falls on Friday, Jan. 6, from 1-2 p.m. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Granite Falls, officiated by Dr. Robert B. Evans. Military Honors will be provided by the Caldwell County Veteran’s Honor Guard and the United States Navy.
