****Notice**** Services for Patricia Barry have been rescheduled for Saturday, September 22, 2018 in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service at 2:30 PM due to the weather forecast. Patricia Elaine Barry of Lenoir died September 7, 2018 after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was born June 6, 1943 in Charlotte, NC, the daughter of Ambrose G. Barry and Ethel Lucielle Keller Barry Bridges. She is survived by her longtime friend Betty Diane “Carp” Carpenter of Lenoir, her brother Ambrose G. Barry (Hilda) of Concord, her sister Sharon Barry Moon (Bruce) of South Carolina, her niece Mona Elizabeth Barry (Dave) of Utah, her niece Kimberly Moon Bullard (Johnathan) of Georgia, cousin Charles Herbert Keller, Jr and wife Gerry of Lenoir and numerous cousins of the Barry family. Pat grew up in Morganton, NC graduating from Morganton High School in 1960. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the University of NC at Greensboro and her Master’s Degree in Physical Education from Florida State University. She began her career with the Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland in 1964 where she taught and coached for 11 years. During her coaching career she won two state championships & was instrumental in helping many of her students gain college scholarships. After teaching she became the Coordinator of Physical Education & Athletics, a position she held for 20 years. During that time she was instrumental in implementing Title IX and developing equality in athletics for women. After retiring she worked as a consultant for the Maryland State Department of Education for 15 years. After retiring to Lenoir in 1998 Pat became active in the Altrusa Club of Caldwell Co., a community service club. She developed an interest and real talent for woodworking which she enjoyed at the Senior Center in Morganton. Pat had a real passion for gardening especially growing many & various tomato plants which she often shared with friends and neighbors. She loved to travel and cruising was a passion. Pat touched the lives of many in a very positive way even those who barely knew her & those that knew her well were very fortunate. She will be missed and remembered by many. A memorial service will be held at Evans Funeral Service & Crematory, 1070 Taylorsville Road SE, Lenoir, on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 2:30 pm.
