Oscar Boyd Icenhour

October 14, 1934 — November 21, 2012

Mr. Oscar Boyd Icenhour, of Lenoir, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Oscar, known to most as Boyd, is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Nancy Louise Hartley Icenhour. He will also be missed by his three surviving children; Randy Keith Icenhour, Jeffrey Allen Icenhour, and Lori Ann Allen and is preceded in death by his son, Michael Boyd Icenhour. Boyd was also the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One brother, Bill Icenhour survives him and he is preceded in death by four sisters and a brother. Boyd was known as “Kook” by many of his friends and family.  He was an avid collector of Native American artifacts, particularly arrowheads as well as a devoted historian of Native American Culture. A student of life, his curiosity and inquisitive nature made him a wealth of knowledge on almost any topic. All who knew him were captivated by his insight, intelligence, and mischievous smile, which usually indicated a new idea just under the surface. A collector of antiques as well, “Kook” was well-known for his vast experience and keen eye for spotting the value in something that most would not see as anything special. He was also able to apply this skill to people as well. When others lost faith in those he loved, he was always able to find the treasures underneath just waiting to be revealed. Outspoken in nature, he was always ready with an honest opinion on any topic and was held in high esteem because of that honesty. Being a part of nature was important to him, whether strolling the “North 40” behind his home or sitting on his lawnmower keeping the front yard immaculate. Boyd was a veteran of the Korean War, where he was an infantryman. He was also an employee of Hammary Furniture Company and was an essential team member, trainer, and boring machine operator. Never daunted by any task, he was valued for his creativity, knowledge, and willingness to perform jobs that many would not do. He was respected by all who he worked for and with. A celebration of Boyd’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2012 in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Reverend Randy Goode officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
