Opal Lovella Young Carter of 1145 Powell Road, Lenoir Park passed away March 18, 2009 at Caldwell Hospice. She was born February 15, 1912 in Copperhill, Tennessee, to the late Thomas H. and Hattie Lula Phillips Young. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Carter, Sr. and her two sons, James S. (Bud) Carter, JR. and Douglas Scot Carter; three brothers, Everette A. young of Newark, Delaware, Dr. J. Fred Young of Freeport Illinois, and J. Norman Young of Burlington, NC; two sisters, Mrs. R.L. Justus of Gastonia, NC and Miss Blanche Young of Gastonia. She is survived by her daughter Carol Price and husband H. Lewis Price of Lenoir; two grandchildren H. Lewis Price, Jr. (Lew) and wife Lora of St. Helena, CA, and Courtney Price Ellis and husband Sam of Lenoir; four great grandchildren, Rae Jonas Price of Fallbrook, CA and thorn, Trey, and Cade Ellis of Lenoir; and Step Great Granddaughter Ciandra Cole of St. Helena, CA. She is also survived by four nieces of Gastonia-Gwen Justus, Jean Sosebee and husband Wayne, Marion Clemmer and husband Brady and Lana Kirby and husband Danile. Opal loved her family and was a devoted, resourceful homemaker. She was talented and created many beautiful pieces of Crochet, Cross Stitching, and needlepoint. She enjoyed making pillowcases with crocheted lace and giving them to friends. She was a graduate of the city schools of Gastonia, and the National Business Training School of Charlotte. She was employed by the Carter Traveler Company of Gastonia as an inspector of travelers, the Glenn L. Martin Aviation of Baltimore, MD. as an Engineering inspector during WWII. After the war the family returned to Gastonia, and she was office manager of Spencer Mountain Mills of Gaston County and later she was employed by Akers Motor lines of Gastoina. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lenoir and was Director of missions, Secretary and treasurer of the women?s Missionary Union, and taught the Winsome Sunday School Class. She was active in the mission programs in several cities in which she resided. She was a volunteer at Caldwell Memorial Hospital, helped with the meals on wheels program and tutored children at primary school. A celebration of life for Mrs. Carter will be held on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist church of Lenoir. Officiating will be Dr. David Smith and Dr. Fred Barnes. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service. A private burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Jim Greene, Randall Dula, Sam Ellis, Danny Barlow, Marvin Lovins, and Newell Price, JR.
