Minnie Sue McDonald, age 94, died peacefully and joined her Creator on July 27, 2015, at the home of her youngest daughter, Glennie McDonald Sims, surrounded by family and caregivers.She was born November 28, 1920, in Granite Falls, North Carolina, the daughter of Roscoe Fred Marshall and Mary Catherine Williams Marshall. Sue is remembered by all who knew her as one of the most kind, generous, and sweet people they had ever known.She truly exemplified Christ’s command to love one another as He loves us.She never asked for anything in return, put others’ needs before her own, and could be counted on to be her family’s strength by comforting, encouraging, affirming, and loving unconditionally.She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt who loved her family beyond measure and who demonstrated that love in countless ways each and every day.One of her favorite verses of Scripture was John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."She also held to Romans 8:28 which says, “For we know that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.”Her faith manifested itself in works more often than just words. To those who knew and loved her, she is irreplaceable and will be missed beyond words. Her family will always be thankful for her joy in teaching us to love one another and face problems in life with a sense of humor. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack W. Simmons; her parents, Roscoe Fred and Mary Catherine Williams Marshall; her sister Louise Marshall McRary, and her brother Harold Marshall. She is survived by a brother, Roscoe Marshall and his wife, Carolyn Marshall of West Palm Beach, Florida; two daughters, Melinda McDonald Hefner and partner Gary Altobelli of Hickory and Glennie McDonald Sims and her husband Joe Sims of Granite Falls; six grandchildren, Kristen Hefner and her husband, Irv Carty; Lauren Hefner; Whitney Sims Braswell and her husband, Trey Braswell; Scott Sims and his wife, Kelsey Sims; Andrew Sims, and Molly Sims.Additionally, she leaves behind six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and their families, whom she loved dearly. Pallbearers were Scott Sims, Andrew Sims, Trey Braswell, Robert Reid, Dennis Marshall, Will McRary and Joe Sims. Sue was a lifelong member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in the Dudley Shoals community, where she was the congregation’s longest member. Her service are Thursday at 11 am, with receiving offriends immediately afterward.The family will be at the home of her daughter, Glennie, at other times and welcome friends and family.
