Martha Sue Butler

Lenoir, NC- Mrs. Martha Sue Owings Butler, age 81, of Lenoir, passed away on Tuesday August 3, 2010 at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care. Born October 12, 1928 in Paducah, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late William M. and Ola Brack Owings. Martha was a 1948 graduate of Tilghman High School in Paducah, Kentucky. She married Don Butler in 1947 and moved together to Chicago. She was a homemaker, but also a gifted crafter. She specialized in scherenschnitte, the art of German paper cutting. She displayed and sold her work in shows & shops throughout the Midwest and the North Carolina Mountains. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Lenoir. She taught preschoolers in Sunday school at churches in Illinois, Florida, and North Carolina for over 50 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Fred Godwin Owings and Robert Mason Owings; and a great granddaughter, Alexandra Nicole Woelm. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Donald Dean Butler of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Reverend Steve Butler and wife, Martha of Lenoir; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Lou Buchiet and husband, George of Paducah, KY ; three grandchildren, Catherine Anne Woelm, Elizabeth Mary Butler, and Mark Christopher Butler; four great grandchildren, James Donald Woelm, Raelin Blaze Butler, Meagan Cathleen Woelm, and Logan Vincent Donlon Butler; her nieces, Tracy Cornell and Julie Vantassel. A celebration of Martha?s life will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Central Baptist Church at 11:00 AM. Officiating will be Reverend John Jernigan. There will be a private burial at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 6, 2010 at Evans Funeral Service from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
