Marlene Setzer Buckner

Granite Falls, NC- Mrs. Marlene S. Buckner, age 78, passed away on Tuesday, June 07, 2011, at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care. Mrs. Buckner was born in Caldwell County on April 15, 1933 to the late Brady and Carrie Wilson Setzer and raised by her aunt and uncle, Luther and Minnie Lou Baker. She was married for over 54 years to the late Clayton W. Buckner. Mrs. Buckner attended East Harper Elementary School and graduated from Lenoir High School where she played 1st clarinet and was the drum majorette of the Lenoir High School Band, under the direction of Captain Harper. Marlene never met a stranger and had a love of talking and telling stories. She retired from Burlington Industries in 1984. She was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church for 61 years where she was a Youth Sunday School Teacher, WMU teacher, and member of the choir. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her son Kenneth Buckner. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Kim and Toby Smith of Granite Falls; Lisa and Perry Wallace of Granite Falls; five grandchildren; Cody Smith and wife, Amanda; Carrie Smith Curtis and husband Brent; Joshua Wallace; Daniel Wallace; and Rachel Wallace; two sisters, Juanita Spencer of Gastonia and Vivian Oliver of Maryland; three sisters-in-law, Yvonne Buckner of Hickory, Vickie Johnson Burke of Georgia, and Mary Ellen Buckner of San Antonio, TX; one brother-in-law, Van Johnson; special relatives, Helen Baker and Beverly and Jim Edwards; life- long friend Waylene Franklin and husband, Charles; and friend Betty Hamby Lewis. The funeral service for Mrs. Buckner will be held at 1:00 on Friday, June 10, 2011 at Whitnel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment will immediately follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 10, 2011 from 11:30 until 1:00 prior to the service at the church.
