Marion Odessa Dickson Hendrix affectionately known as “Odessa,” was born to the late David and Vivian Dickson on July 18, 1944, in Lenoir, NC. She departed this life on July 10, 2024, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother David Dickson, Jr.
As a child Marion’s spiritual foundation was established at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Lenoir, NC. Marion was educated in Caldwell County and graduated from Freedman High School in 1962. Marion attended North Carolina Central University for 2 years and completed her undergraduate studies at Appalachian State University in 1974. She received her Master of Library Science degree from Appalachian State University in 1982.
In 1964, Marion married Vaughan (Tyrone) Hendrix and to this union their beloved daughter Inger was born in May 1965. Over the years the family of three lived in Greensboro, NC, Ettrick, VA, Boone, NC, Chapel Hill, NC and settled in Charlotte, NC in 1978.
Marion worked in various educational settings including Elementary, Junior High/Middle and retired at East Mecklenburg Senior High School in 2010. As a Media Specialist she was a collector of information and enjoyed reading books and sharing her experiences and knowledge with others. At retirement she accepted the role of “personal chauffeur and daily dining partner” for her grand-daughter, Melodi. It was routine for she and Melodi to dine together, each day after school pick, up from 6th grade to 12th grade.
She is survived by her husband Dr. Vaughan T. Hendrix, her daughter Inger H. Haskins and husband Jason, her beloved grand-daughter Melodi E. Haskins all of Charlotte, NC; brother, Joseph L. Dickson and wife Cheryl of Lewisville, NC, brother Charles “Pete” Dickson of Lenoir, NC, sister Rebecca Dickson Moore of Hickory, NC, special cousins Paul Dixon, Jr. and Patricia Dixon Dreher, and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. Hendrix will be Saturday, July 20, 2024 at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, 539 Willow Street NW Lenoir, NC 28645, at 12:00PM with a visitation from 11:00AM until 12:00PM.
