Lenoir- Mrs. Margaret Laney Smith, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Caldwell UNC Healthcare. She was born in Catawba County on April 28, 1924 to the late Bryant and Edna Beach Laney. Margaret was devoted to her family, friends, church and community. Margaret graduated from Queens College in Charlotte and returned to Lenoir to begin her work career. She was married to the late Frank L. Smith, Jr.for more than 47 years. Margaret was involved in the local community, including the Lenoir Service League for more than 40 years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir for over 70 years, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She began working at the church as church hostess and then became the administrative assistant. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters and her son-in-law, Michael Cardin. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Margaret Dianne Smith of Los Angeles, CA; Melanie Mason and husband, Chris of Richmond, VA; son, Frank L. (Butch) Smith, III of Lenoir; grandchildren, Grayson Smith and wife, Candace of Charlotte; Laney Myers and husband, Nathan of Greenwich, CT; Laura Mason of Richmond, VA and Caroline Mason of Troy, NY; great-grandchildren, Porter St. John and Emory Smith of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Margaret will be held at First Baptist Church of Lenoir on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Josh Hughes and Dr. David Smith officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor beginning at 1:00 prior to the service.
