Kernersville, NC – Mrs. Leola Marie Knight Pipes-Ashley, age 86, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Piney Grove Nursing Center in Kernersville. She was born in Caldwell County on October 19, 1924 to the late David Albert Knight and Lelia May Arney Knight. Mrs. Pipes-Ashley was the widow of James D. Pipes, who died in 1992, and was married to for 48 years. She was the wife of Tankersley L. Ashley of the home for more than 15 years. Mrs. Pipes-Ashley was a graduate of Hudson High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sunset Harbor. She had been a member of Andrew Chapel Church in Montross, Virginia for 44 years. She was also a loyal member and supporter of the American Legion Auxillary for 44 years. In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Jay Olin Knight and Billy Jo Knight; and a sister, Betty Gray Spengler. Other than her husband, she is survived by her children, James Ervin Pipes and wife, Deborah; Brenda Jean Pipes Hanks and husband, Kenneth; Larry Steven Pipes and wife, Marjorie; sisters, Callie Brown and husband, John Vance; Doris Van Dyke and husband, Charles; Shirley Ann Craig and husband, Dennis; grandchildren, Stacy Hanks Pierson and husband, David; Robert Kenneth Hanks, Jr.; James Steven McNeal Hanks and wife, Betsy; Collin Fletcher Pipes; Larry Steven Pipes II; great-grandchildren, Madison Carey Pierson, Joseph David Pierson, Jacob Raymond Hanks, Katherine Elizabeth Hanks; and many nieces and nephews; and one special niece, Tyra and friends, Dan and Missy; Many loyal neighbors, Billy, Richard and Kathy Cooper; and many others of Sunset Harbor, NC. The funeral service for Mrs. Pipes-Ashley will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 2:00 PM. Reverend Wayne Tuttle will be officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service.
