Hudson, NC- Mr. Lenard Sullivan, age 87, of Hudson, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Born September 21, 1925 in Caldwell County, Mr. Sullivan was a son of the late William Fred and Bessie Melinda Bryant Sullivan and the husband of Mrs. Margaret Piercy Sullivan of the residence who in October would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Melody Ann Sullivan and Melinda Lee Sullivan Keaton; 2 sisters, Beatrice Camp and Alice Audrey Sullivan; one ½ sister, Dorothy Jean Luttrell and one brother, Clem Sullivan. Lenard was a lifetime member of the Mt. Herman United Methodist Church where he was also a Boy Scout leader. He was owner/operator of Sullivan Floor Company for over 60 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII. He fought the Battle of the Bulge, served in Normandy and in Africa. He drove a tank for General George C. Patton. Lenard was awarded 5 Bronze Service Stars, The Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and The European African Middle Eastern Ribbon. Lenard was a race car fan and was a member of the Lambert Racing Team Pit Crew. He was a member of the American Legion Post 29 where he was an avid fan of the 29er’s baseball team and served as the Team Grandpa of the 2000 State Championship Team. Lenard was known as a craftsman to many, using his talents to build replicas of historical churches such as Chapel of Rest, Cedar Valley United Methodist Church and other buildings such as Evans Funeral Service and the Rockingham Speedway. Surviving other than his wife is his daughter Ginger Sullivan Day and husband Myron of Hudson; 3 Grandchildren, Josh Day, Mindy Rice, Ashley Keaton Cox; 4 Great-Grandchildren, Lane Rice, Kendra Marksberry, Callie Cox, Shelby Lee Cox and 4 Great-Great Grandchildren, Michael Lee Marksberry, Maddox Marksberry, Memphis Marksberry and Alyssa Dawn Ahner. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. A celebration of Lenard’s life will be held 3:00 PM Sunday at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church, 2695 Alfred Hartley Road in Lenoir, with Pastor Jenn Hiatt and Pastor Jim Evans officiating. He will lie in state from 2:30 until 3:00 prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Mount Hermon United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Evans Funeral Service in Lenoir. Pallbearers will be: Bill Piercy, Keith Piercy, Johnny Piercy, Jerry Piercy, Fred Piercy, Jr. and Eddie Camp. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Diane Parris, Waylene Franklin, Barbara Hart, Yvonne Butner, Ellen Shew and Sarah Wilson.
