Juanita Chapman Smith, 91, of Sawmills passed away on January 27, 2020 at Caldwell Hospice, Robbins Center in Hudson.She was born on August 30, 1928 in Appalachia, Virginia to James Woodall and Minnie Lee Carter Chapman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death, by her brothers, J.C. Chapman and his wife, Hazel; Ervin Chapman, and his wife, Grace; her sister, Jean Killian, and husband, Claude; her granddaughter, Jacqueline Olivia Extine; nephews, Michael Killian, Kenneth Chapman, Jimmy Chapman, and Randy Ramsey. In her younger years, she was an excellent seamstress, knitter, and could make almost any handcraft project. Her family has plenty of her sown and handmade items to treasure.In later years as her arthritis became severe, she continued to do projects with beads and plastic canvas.She made gifts for family, friends, cancer survivors, healthcare providers and others she encountered.At 91, she was visiting in neighbors’ and church members’ homes bringing them handmade items and candy. She was a member of Dry Ponds Baptist Church for over 60 years. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 68 years, Oliver Wilson Smith; her daughter Karen Smith Allen and husband, Jeff; her daughter, Peggy Smith Messick and husband, Terry; her favorite granddaughter, Heather Extine Diaz and her husband, Kerry and their son, Mykiah; her favorite grandson, William E. Extine, Jr. and his wife Courtney and their daughter, Amanda.She will also be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in- law, brothers-in-law, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, step great, great grandchildren, church members, friends and neighbors. Services will be held at Dry Ponds Baptist Church on Thursday, January 30 at 3 pm at Dry Ponds Baptist Church.Rev. Rob Evans will be officiating.Prior to the funeral, the family will receive friends from 2-3 pm at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.
