his sister who passed in 2021. Joe is survived by one adopted sister: Mary Nell Goble, who resides at
J. Iverson Riddle Center in Morganton, NC; two nephews (sons of sister Dot): Thomas (“Tommy”)
Land and Robert “Bobby” Goble Land of Hudson and his wife Debra, two great nephews: Phillip Land,
(son of Thomas), and Travis Land, (adopted son of Thomas), and one great great nephew: Jayden Land, (grandson of Thomas).

A celebration of his life and a respectful service honoring Mr. Goble with will occur on Sunday, July 7th
at Tabernacle Advent Christian Church on Wildwood Rd. in Lenoir, NC. Receiving of friends will start
at 2 PM, service at 3 PM and burial in the church cemetery immediately following the service.

Mr. Goble was a great and honorable man, known by many and loved by all who knew him, and whose
life had meaning and purpose. He served God to the best of his ability, even following the dietary
restrictions in the Bible's book of Leviticus; never eating pork, bottom dwelling fish or any other thing
that was prohibited. He was a joy to all who knew him. He loved people and so enjoyed visitors,
especially during his last five years while he resided at Brookdale Assisted Living in Lenoir.

Joe was born at home in the Patterson area of Caldwell County, NC on Wednesday, April 20, 1927 to
parents William Robert Goble and Mamie Hamby Goble. Dr. C.L. Wilson had been notified and had
come to the Goble home, which was located on the corner of Hwy 268 and Buffalo Cove Rd. in the
wee morning hours of April 20th, and helped deliver healthy baby boy Joe to Robert and Mamie at 4
AM. Robert and Mamie were thrilled with Joe's arrival, as the couple had been married for several
years after Robert had returned from serving in WW1, and their first son, Robert Jr., had died at birth in
1925. In 1930, the family moved into town in Lenoir and Robert and Mamie had a daughter on April
19th, 1930, to be a beloved sister to Joe. Her name was Dorothy, but everyone called her Dot. Joe and
Dot's parents also ended up adopting the orphaned daughter of Mamie's sister, who died during
childbirth, and raising her handicapped child in their home. Her name is Mary Nell Goble, and she is a
resident at J. Iverson Riddle Center in Morganton.

Joe grew up and graduated from Lenoir High School in the Spring of 1945. Joe worked for a short
time at Lenoir Chair company in the cloth room and also at Hibriten Furniture Co. WWII officially
ended on September 2,1945. Joe felt called to sign up for military service with an army recruiter at the
Lenoir post office, was sent for his physical exam at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, SC and in February of
1946, was sent to San Antonio,Texas for basic training, then stationed for a short period at the Air
Force base at Randoul, Il. The US Air Force had just been established as a separate branch of the army.
Joe served the remainder of his military service being stationed in Miami, Florida as a weather look-out
for the Air Force, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He helped set up the Air Force Hurricane Watch

Office in June of 1947. He enjoyed his time in Miami in the service and retained much of the
meteorological knowledge he gained throughout his life. He always loved looking at the sky and
identifying the types of clouds. He also enjoyed watching nature and wildlife, especially birds and
could identify many types of birds quickly. When he returned to Lenoir after his departure from the
military in October of 1947, he took a job with Coble Dairy in Lenoir. He was very handsome, but
humble and never thought of himself as such. He dated a few girls, but fell in love with Georgia
Whisenant, whose brother Johnny Whisenant, was a famous banjo player of the time. Joe married
Georgia in 1952 and in 1964, Joe Wilson built them a new brick home in Prestwood heights in Lenoir,
where they lived out the remainder of their 67 years of marriage together. Joe would have liked to have
children, but Georgia had raised nieces and nephews for her sisters at her parents' home and she did not want to have children, so they never did. However, they both loved children and kept many children in their home for various people and were godparents who kept Josh and Paul Greene in their home for quite some time as unofficial foster parents to them.

Joe was hired by the US Postal Service in 1956 and carried mail and did postal work until 1986 when
he retired. He loved working for the post office and became widely known and loved in the area as he
carried out his duties as postman with pride and care. After his retirement in 1986, Joe and Georgia
enjoyed being active members of Tabernacle Advent Christian Church of Lenoir where Joe served as
Deacon, and were active in other church and civic organizations. Joe was always very attentive to his
wife Georgia and spent much of his time attending to her needs and desires. Georgia kept an extremely clean and tidy home and loved to profusely decorate their home during holiday seasons. After their health began to decline in their latter years, Ms. Carolyn Griffin served them as their beloved housekeeper for approximately 14 years.

Joe was absolutely a treasure and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Terry Pratchett
(1948-2015) said, “Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?” Let us
continue to speak the name of this sweet, sweet man, Mr. Joe Goble.
