John Washington Smith

John Washington Smith, 92, of Lenoir, NC passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

John was born on October 21, 1931 to the late William McKinley and Nora Cannon Smith.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Willa Dean Carlton Smith; his brother; Burl Smith; sister, Faye Calloway; and granddaughter, Deanna Jean Smith.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter; Barbara Smith (Doug); sister, Elizabeth “Lib” Watson; granddaughter, Destiny Williford; great-granddaughter, Kya and numerous other family and friends.

John was a decorated Korean War Veteran being awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He was also a Military Policeman during his service.  He was a Merchant Marine after his time in the service.  John was an avid fisherman and loved being on the water.  John loved bluegrass music and banjos.  He spent a lot of hours at the Drexel Barber Shop.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 15, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Union Grove Baptist Church of Lenoir with Pastor Sam Craven officiating.  Burial will follow at Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  His granddaughter's cremains, Deanna Jean Smith, will also be buried with him.
