Jimmy Lane Steele

Mr. Jimmy Lane Steele, age 64, of Morganton, joined his heavenly father on Friday, May 4, 2012 at Burke Hospice & Palliative Care after an eight year battle with heart disease. Jimmy was born on January 13, 1948 in Newton, NC, he was a son of Peggy Campbell Duckworth and the late Arnold B. Steele. Jimmy spent many years giving back to the children of his community. He spent a number of years as Athletic Director of the Oak Hill Recreation Center, Freedom Band Boosters, the Carolina Thunder Drum Corps and the Oak Hill Ruritan Club. He was the owner and operator of Jimmy Steele Builders for over 30 years. He enjoyed helping others and was known to donate his time and materials to help the elderly with home improvements. In his later years, he enjoyed restoring antique cars and attending car shows and cruise-ins. He also supported S.M.A.R.T. (Supplies, Materials and Resources for Teachers), which helps provide school supplies to teachers for students who otherwise couldn’t afford them.  He will be remembered as a loving father, son, brother and friend. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his greatest accomplishments in life, his daughter, Betsy Steele and his son, Michael Steele(wife Daphne); his step father, Elbert Duckworth; a sister, Carole Daves(husband, Harold); a special niece Michelle Clark (husband Alan); his grand dogs, Saylor, Cooper & Lucy; he is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. A memorial service celebrating Jimmy’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 3:00 PM at the Mountain Grove United Methodist Church with Reverend Don Freshour and Dr. Ralph May officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00PM to 3:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to S.M.A.R.T. c/o Scott Carlton, 1211 Burkemont Avenue, Morganton, NC 28655 or to Burke Hospice & Palliative Care at 1715 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.
