Jewel Elaine Cowick, age 71, has left her illness behind as she transitioned from this life to her next to be with her Lord and Savior. She was born December 22, 1949 in Caldwell County to Lawrence and Louise Carswell.She graduated from Gamewell Collettsville High School in 1968 and graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, NC with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education in 1972.She taught 5th grade at Gamewell Elementary School for 34 years until 2007 when she retired.She loved all of her students and is remembered by many as “my best teacher ever”.She was a member of the South Lenoir Church of God where she was a Sunday School teacher and Choir member.In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a baby brother; two nephews, Michael Carswell and David Harwood; a niece, Charity Hope Carswell. Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Michael Cowick; a son, Matthew Cowick (wife Jenny); her grandchildren, Jocelyn, Raelyn, Liam and Gabe Cowick; her brothers, Bill Carswell (wife Mary), Grady Carswell (wife Carolyn) and Larry Carswell (wife Sue); her sisters, Dorothy Harwood (husband Horace), Barbara Henniger and Joyce Fox (husband Don); she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will miss their “Aunt Jewel”. A graveside service celebrating Jewel’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 12:00 PM in the Blue Ridge Memorial Park with Bishop Ernest Bowes and Bishop Charles Ledford officiating.
