JANICE CARDWELL PAYNE walked into the arms of Jesus on April 4, 2017 surrounded by those she loved most. Born March 3, 1942 in Baton, NC, Janice never met a stranger. She loved people and she loved her Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents: Raymond Layfayette and Carrie Mae (Winebarger) Cardwell and one nephew, Gene Crump, Jr. She is survived by her beloved children: her son, Philip Payne, Jr. of Lenoir, and her daughter, J. Denice von Gnechten (Richard) of Charlotte. Janice has five beautiful granddaughters: Jessica D. Shepperd, Ashley M. Payne, Jacqueline V. Ferebee (Christopher), Rachel A. Lamar (RG) and Jillian D. Floyd (Jamie) and four precious great grandchildren; Alexis, Bradin, Seth and Maddison Sheppard. She is also survived by five loving sisters, Betty Crump, Jewel Greene, Margaret Livingston (David), Nina Clark (Ronnie), Helen Allred (Blaine) and her brother, Finley Cardwell (Edna), all of Lenoir. Ten nieces and nephews, as well as a large extended family, also survive Janice and will miss her dearly. Janice was a long-time member of Gospel Truth Ministries where she taught Sunday School, VBS and cooked her heart out for her church family and the community. Friends will be received at Evans Funeral Service, 1070 Taylorsville Road, Lenoir at 4 pm on Friday, April 7, 2017. A celebration of life will follow at the Evans Chapel at 5 pm.
