Mrs. Jan Melton Callaway, age 84 of Lenoir passed away peacefully with her family at her bedside on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at Caldwell UNC Healthcare. Born October 1, 1934 in Caldwell County, Jan was the daughter of the late Thomas and Martha Hart Melton.She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lenoir and loved her church family.One of the things Jan enjoyed most was spending time at work, and with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jan was a proud member of the 1952 class of Lenoir High School.She was an outstanding basketball player, having scored a record 38 points in one game. Jan was an avid Duke, Braves and Elvis fan.Jan will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.She will be greatly missed.In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Callaway. Survivors include her two sons, Chris Callaway (wife Liz) and Mike Callaway (wife Lisa) both of Lenoir;two brothers, Jim Melton (wife Virginia) of Granite Falls, and Tommy Melton (wife Lillie Ruth) of Lenoir;her grandchildren, Josh Tolbert, Lindsay Wright (husband Matthew), and Ryan Callaway; her great-grandchildren, Adah Wright and Evelyn Jan Wright; a special cousin, Weyburn Smith; she is also survived by numerous other relatives and special friends. A celebration of Jan’s life will be held on Friday, June 14, 2019, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lenoir at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Joe Parker officiating.Interment will follow the service at Collier’s United Methodist Church.Serving as pallbearers will be Jacob Pritchett, David Shoun, Jonathan Shoun, Ryan Callaway, Michael Callaway and Kirk Melton.Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Callaway and Josh Tolbert. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Memorials can be made to Trinity United Methodist Church at 901 Seehorn St. NE, Lenoir, NC28645.
