James C. Kent

James C. Kent Sr. (Jim), 66 of Lenoir, passed away at Caldwell Memorial Hospital on May 24, 2006. He was born in the Gamewell Community of Caldwell County on February 10, 1940, to the late Robert A. Kent Sr. and Zella Anderson Kent. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Roberta K. Bare, Anne K. Hickman and Ruby K. Lamkin and one brother William F. Kent, Sr. Mr. Kent is survived by his wife, Mrs. Janelle T. Kent of the home; one son James C. Kent, Jr. and wife Tina M. Kent of Concord, two daughters Deborah Kent-Smith and husband Frank L. Smith III (Butch) of Lenoir, Rebecca K. Lawing and husband Harold D. Lawing, Jr. (Hal) of Lenoir, and two step sons Gregory O. Smith and Todd E. Smith both of Lenoir. Mr. Kent?s pride and joy was his five grandchildren Matthew Dula, Griffin Kent, Sawyer Kent, Houston Lawing, Holden Lawing and one step granddaughter Kayla Smith. Mr. Kent is also survived by two brothers, Horry M. Kent, Sr. and Robert A. Kent, Jr. both of Lenoir and four sisters, Julia K. Watkins of Virginia Beach, VA and Virginia K. Oxford, Lillian K. Setzer and Jerri K. Heltzer all of Lenoir. Mr. Kent graduated from Gamewell High School in 1958 and attended Appalachian State University and Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. Mr. Kent was active in Little League baseball in Caldwell County. For many years, he was well known for his lively broadcasts of high school and American Legion baseball games on WJRI radio. Mr. Kent was a past president of the West Caldwell Boosters club and very active in supporting sporting events in the Gamewell community. Mr. Kent was retired from the SOO Line Railroad and was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church. The family requests that memorials be given to Caldwell County Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St., Lenoir, NC 28645 and College Avenue Baptist Church, 1201 College Avenue, Lenoir, NC 28645. A celebration of Mr. Kent?s life will be held at College Avenue Baptist Church in Lenoir at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 27, 2006 with Dr. Ronald M. Hinson and Dr. David B. Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Flemings Chapel Baptist Church in Gamewell immediately following the service. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary of College Avenue Baptist Church on Friday, May 26, 2006 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Robert Kent III, Bill Kent, Jr., Horry Kent Jr., Mikeal Kent, David Kent, Timothy Barlow, Doug McGalliard and James Setzer will be serving as pallbearers.
