Granite Falls, NC – Mrs. Irene Pope, age 81, of Granite Falls, died Saturday, December 11, 2010 at College Pines Nursing Center. Born February 21, 1929 in McDowell County, Mrs. Pope was a daughter of the late William McKinley and Lucy Mae Hargess Pope and the wife of Mr. Tate Henry Pope, Jr. of the home. Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by three sisters, Hazel Childers, Ruth Church and Frances Harris, and three brothers, Raymond Pope, Darrell Pope and David Allen Pope. Mrs. Pope was an active member of Dry Ponds Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for many years; was a member of the Evelyn Wilson Memorial Sunday school class and worked in the FISH Ministry with the church. Surviving other than her husband are her three children, Tim Pope and wife Lenita; Jeff Pope and wife Susan; Kathy Hamby and husband Tony, all of Granite Falls; 2 sisters, Ethelene Pope Hollar and Ann Pope and husband Roland, all of Dover, Delaware; 4 brothers, Clifford Pope and wife Pat of Burke County; Floyd Pope and wife Libby of Hudson; John Pope of Granite Falls; Cecil Pope and wife Corinne of Granite Falls; 6 grandchildren, Michelle Hamby, Clint Hamby, Jessica Bowman, Audrey Pope, Ethan Pope and Austin Pope and one great-grandchild, Haley Duncan. A celebration of Mrs. Pope’s life will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Dry Ponds Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Crouse officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4:00 PM, Tuesday prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be: Tim Pope, Jeff Pope, Tony Hamby, Ethan Pope, Austin Pope, Zack Hamby and Josh Bowman.
