The blessed life of Hugh Canipe peacefully came to an end on Saturday morning May 28th, 2016. Hugh was born at home in Lincoln County to Sam & Bertha Canipe on July 23, 1926. He was one of eight children. Hugh is survived by his wife of 69 years, Katherine Angley Canipe, one son and wife, Sam & Linda Canipe, a daughter and husband, Ann & JR Spann, two grandchildren, Holly Pritchard of Greensboro and Mason Pritchard of Lenoir. He was the step-grandfather of Greg Cook & wife Amy, Lori Wade & husband Andrew and Grayson Spann. He is also survived by two sisters, Jean Bass & husband Robert and Barbara (Bobbie) & husband Bob Wylie. Also two step-great grandchildren, Hunter & Jake Cook. Mr. Canipe was a proud veteran of WWII serving in the Navy aboard the USS Implicit, a naval mine sweeper. His battle group served in the Mediterranean and later the Pacific theater. Hugh attended reunions with surviving crew until a few years ago. Canipe came to Caldwell County as a teenager beginning work for Kent Coffey before the war. After the war Hugh returned to Lenoir and became a salesman for Courtney Clothing Company. His longest tenure came with WE Shaw Furniture Company where he served in many capacities to include store manager for their location in Granite Falls. He retired from Bush Olds-Pontiac-GMC. Hugh was a faithful Christian as a member of the First Baptist Church in Lenoir. Through the years he served as a Sunday School teacher, member of the church’s initial sound system committee, usher and chairman of the usher committee, Deacon and ultimately elected a life deacon in 1996. A celebration of Mr. Canipe’s life will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Lenoir with Reverend Josh Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service in the church sanctuary. Hugh will be missed by his family, friends and many contacts he developed in the community. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Love Fund or Hospice.
