Hermon George Smith

Hermon Smith Hudson, NC – Mr. Hermon George Smith, age 81, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He was born in Avery County on June 6, 1931 to the late Otts and Essie Puckett Smith. He was married to Leona Stout Smith for 61 years. Mr. Smith was a former member of Hudson Optimist Club and was selected as Optimist of the year for 1967-1968. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired truck driver and was known by his handle “Catalog Man.” He was a member of Hudson First Baptist Church and the Berean Sunday School Class. He had been a member of the Hibriten Masonic Lodge 262 for 50 years. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, and later in life he loved mowing and manicuring his lawn. Mr. Smith was an active participant of the Avery County Fair and won several blue ribbons. In February of this year he and his family received the Avery County Family of the Year award for 2011. He was probably best known for the past 30 years for selling Christmas trees in Lenoir and Hickory. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Denise Smith and granddaughter, Jennifer Smith. Other than his wife, he is survived by his sons, Lynn Smith and wife, Lynn of Banner Elk; Larry Smith of Newland; Lanny Smith and wife, Vicki of Norman, OK; grandchildren, Meredith Friga, and husband, Paul of Chapel Hill; Stephen Smith and wife, Sara of Lenoir; Andrew Smith and wife, Cristin of Ashe County; Wally Smith and wife, Jessica of Ashe County; Alecia Smith of Norman, OK; Joseph Burris and wife, Lareeca of Banner Elk; Chris Burris of Banner Elk; great-grandchildren, Tyler White; Nicholas Friga, Gabe Smith, Sam Smith; sister, Mary Pope of Banner Elk; brothers, J.B. Smith and wife Norma, of Banner Elk; D.C. Smith and wife, Bonita of Banner Elk; Cris Smith and wife, Gail of Banner Elk; Henry Smith and wife, Marilyn of Mobile, AL; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Mr. Smith’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Hudson with Pastor Mack Jarvis and Pastor Wade Dellinger officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Clarks Chapel Cemetery on Orchard Drive, Lenoir. Pallbearers will be: Paul Friga, Stephen Smith, Andrew Smith, Wally Smith, Jamie Zielaskowski, and Chris Burris. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Berean Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 prior to the service.
