Evans Funeral Service September 18, 2014 Helen Sherwood Harman Helen Brown Sherwood Harman, 91, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Lenoir Healthcare.She was born on November 18, 1922, in Watauga County and was one of the ten children born to the late Nannie and Jim Sherwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Clark Cecil Harman; three brothers, Ralph Sherwood, Jack Sherwood, and Harry Sherwood; two sisters, Genevieve Henson and Grace Joyce. She is survived by her daughter, Jean Branch and husband Steve of Lenoir; son, Glenn Harman of Galena, Illinois and partner,Chris Nilo; two grandsons, David Doll and wife Eileen of Keene, New Hampshire, and Justin Branch and wife Kendra of Denver, Colorado; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Max, and Juliet Doll, all of Keene, New Hampshire.She is also survived by two sisters, Kathryn Isaacs of Wytheville, Virginia, and Carolyn McCaslin of Charlotte; and two brothers, Larry Sherwood of Oklahoma City and Bill Sherwood of Sugar Grove. She graduated from Bethel High School in Watauga County in 1940.She began her career as an educator upon her graduation from Appalachian State Teachers’ College in 1944.She taught at Granite Falls Elementary School and West Lenoir Elementary School, directedinstruction for the Lenoir City Schools, and served as principal of East Harper Elementary School from 1967 until her retirement in 1982.During her tenure East Harper became a demonstration kindergarten, as well as a demonstration school.She served both as consultant and as chairman of evaluation committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).She held offices in numerous professional associations including PTA, NC Association of Educators, Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Division of Principals, and Alpha Delta Kappa (the international sorority for women teachers.)Also she taught several graduate courses at Appalachian State University and workshops throughout the state.The L. A. Dysart Citizenship Award for Woman of the Year was presented to her in 1976 by the Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce.She received national recognition in an article entitled “The Principal Principle,” written by Arlene Silberman in the October 1974 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir for over 60 years.A celebration of her life will be held there on Saturday, September 20, at 3:00 in the sanctuary.The family will receive friends in the parlor, across from the sanctuary, from 2:00 – 2:45 prior to the service.Interment will follow at approximately 5:30 at the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Watauga County.
