Lenoir – Mrs. Helen Houck Cooke, age 88, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2015 at Gateway Nursing Center. She was born in Watauga County on March 5, 1926 to the late Elmer Houck and Mattie Howell Houck. Mrs. Cooke was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a faithful, life-long member of Calvary Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery and became affectionately known as “Granny Cooke”. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Howard Cooke; daughter, Arlene Cooke; two sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Cooke is survived by her daughters, Nadine Clark and husband Doug and Lynn Moose and husband, Hal of Olin; grandchildren, Sherry Smith of Lenoir; Brooks Clark of Lenoir; Nathan Moose of Afghanistan; Haley Simmons of Olin; great-grandchildren, Coleman and Rylan Clark; Abby Smith; Malloree Simmons; and step-great-grandchildren, Alex Smith and Jaymin Howard. A celebration of Mrs. Cooke’s life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at 3:00 with Dr. Alan Carr officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Brooks Clark, Coleman Clark, Rylan Clark, Jaymin Howard, Sam Smith, Alex Smith and Mike Nelson. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 prior to the service.
