Lenoir, NC- Mrs. Hazel Lee Burgess, age 79, of Lenoir, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Born July 3, 1931 in Wilkes County, Hazel was a daughter of the late Rufus and Bertha Rhodes Fletcher. Hazel was Baptist by faith and had worked in the food industry for many years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and most important, spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lula Mae Klutz; and three brothers, Guy Fletcher, Bruce Fletcher, and John Henry Fletcher. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Harold Burgess of the home; three daughters, Barbara Holder of Hudson, Linda Gonzales of Granite Falls, and Robin Burgess Adams of Hudson; two sons, Michael Brown and Wayne Burgess both of Granite Falls; two sisters, Sylvia Smithey and Fern Duncan; two brothers, Gene Fletcher and Ralph Fletcher; nine grandchildren, Chris Holder, Laura Starnes, Shannon Walker, William Gonzales Jr., Rhonda Gonzales, Amanda Adams, Brandy Brown, Lorin Burgess and Brenna Burgess; she is also survived by eight great grand children, one great great grandchild and numerous other relatives. A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 1:00PM at Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church in Hudson with Pastor Nicky Waters officiating. Interment will follow the service in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir. The family will receive friends from 12 until 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, prior to the service at the church.
