Obituary – George Larry Ward, Sr.
We regret to announce the passing of George Larry Ward, Sr.,
aged 86, who passed away peacefully on May 24, 2024, in Taylors, SC at
the home of his son and daughter-in-law under Hospice care.
George Larry Ward, Sr. was an Air Traffic Controller, 22 years of
experience in all phases including radar at the
Greenville/Spartanburg Jetport in Greer, SC. He was trained while
in the Air Force serving for 4 years in Panama Canal Zone and
served 2 years in the Reserves. Larry also drove for Overnite
Trucking in Greenville, SC until he retired.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Larry was a family
man, who loved his four children. His son, George, Jr (Linda
Rogers Ward); his three daughters, Kim Stark; Karen Ross;
Cheryl (Rick DeHart).
In his free time, Larry enjoyed being outdoors with his family
doing things like camping, boating, fishing, riding motorcycles,
hunting and he also acquired licenses to fly aircraft which he
enjoyed a great deal which brought him joy and relaxation. He
also loved tinkering on engines or anything mechanical. When
you heard Larry whistling you knew he was either taking
something apart or putting something back together. He also had
a love for animals including his Jack Russell dog. He actively
supported and contributed to various charitable causes.
Larry was raised as a Baptist and was taught the teachings of the
Bible; he accepted Jesus as his Savior.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, George Dewey and Viola
Tester Ward, his brothers, Zane, Dale, Gary Ward and his sister,
Becky Ward Huffman. He is survived by a sister, Myrtle Ward and
two brothers, Kenneth Ward and Bobby Clement. Also, four of his
children listed above, three grandchildren, Curtis, Kayla DeHart
Griffith and Drew Stark; four great-grandchildren, Grace, Elsie,
Ruby-Jade DeHart and Ashlyn Frey; as well as cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at Evans Funeral Service. A funeral service will follow at Evans Funeral Service at 1070 Taylorsville Rd SE, Lenoir. NC on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 1:30 PM with Reverend Anne Beach Waters officiating. Inurnment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park at 2017 Wilkesboro Blvd, Lenoir, NC 28645. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice or your local no-kill Humane Society.
Larry will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through his family and friends.
