Mrs. Freda Jean Patterson, age 84, went home to be with the Lord Friday, November 10, 2023, at her residence. She was born February 24, 1939, in Royal, West Virgina. She was the daughter of Fred Walter Patterson and Pearl White Patterson. She was the paternal granddaughter of Robert Patterson and Maude Witherspoon Patterson. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert James Patterson. She is survived by her spouse Samuel V. Patterson, Sr. Her daughter Dr. Andrea Patterson-Masuka, her son-in-law Francois Masuka and grandson Antoine Benoit Patterson-Masuka. She is also survived by her step-children Minister Mary Patterson, Steven Patterson, and Rev. S. Verdell Patterson Jr. and his wife Carla. She is also survived by her nephew Glenn Patterson. She also had a host of grandchildren, great-nieces, nephews, and cousins. Freda attended the Freedman Elementary and Freedman High School. She attended Bennett College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Psychology from Appalachian State University.
She served in the United States Army and as an adjutant of Harper-Witherspoon Post 231, The American Legion. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul AME Church, where she served in various roles including executive director of the SPOTLITE Program, Inc. the church childcare center, past director of Christian Education, former vice chair of the Stewart Board, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She also served for many years as the Community/Adult Services Director, Blue Ridge Community Action, Inc., She was also a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
She was also affiliated with Community Emergency Response Team, U.S. President’s Citizens Corps, Caldwell County Habitat for Humanity Advocate, Caldwell County Senior Center Board Member, 1966 Graduate of Caldwell Leadership Institute, National Associate of Business Executives.
She was also an avid golfer, a member of the Lenoir Golf Course, and the Coves Seniors Golf Association.
There will be a visitation at St. Paul AME on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 1:00pm with the memorial service to follow at 2:00pm.
