Fred Samuel Sides, Jr., 89, passed away Saturday, September 25, at the Shaire Center. Mr. Sides was born on December 6, 1931 in Caldwell County to Fred and Bessie Sides. Before his retirement, Mr. Sides had a long and successful career as a color specialist at Sherwin Williams. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Whitnel. Mr. Sides was an accomplished athlete, qualifying and running in the Boston Marathon three times, in addition to competing in over twenty marathons, and hundreds of local races. He was proud of being the first man in Caldwell County to run the Boston Marathon. After his running career ended, he continued to ride bicycles with his friends at the Greenway. Mr. Sides is survived by his wife, Dorothy St. John Sides of Lenoir, son Eddie Sides and wife Glenda Sides of Lenoir, son Roger Sides and partner Geneva Hartley of South Carolina, grandson Jeremy Sides and Crystal Sides of Lenoir, Tom Sides and wife Laura of Arizona, and great granddaughters Halia and Jaycee Sides, sisters Reba Rose and Brenda Dula ,husband Bud Dula, stepsons Jack McGuire, Jeffrey McGuire and David McGuire, and stepdaughters Judy McGuire and Angela Cowick. Step grandchildren Adam McGuire, Shane McGuire, Jeff McGuire, Alexander Pinkerton, Amber Grout, and MacKenzie Hartley. He was preceded in death by brothers Bill, Earl and Don Sides and sisters Mary Dean Norris, Norma Jean Caudle, and Nina Hollars , son Darrel Eugene Sides, and step grandson Kelly Cowick. Graveside rites will be held on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Whitnel, Pastor Steve Hedgecock and Pastor Bill Bentley will be officiating.
