Hudson, NC- Mr. Eugene “Gene†Verlon Coffey, age 80, of Hudson, died Monday, April 27, 2009 in Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte. Born January 18, 1929 in Avery County, Mr. Coffey was a son of the late Grover and Cora Gragg Coffey and the husband of Coleen Hartley Coffey, of the home, to whom he was married 54 years. Mr. Coffey, known by his family as “Busterâ€, was a member of Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and church clerk. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was owner/operator of Coffey’s Truck Service.  Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Myrtle Lyda, Esslene Gragg, Louria McLean and Florence Eckard.  Other than his wife, he is survived by three children, Lorraine DiBella and husband Joseph of New Bern; Clifton Coffey and wife Mary of Hudson; James Coffey of Hudson; 1 sister, Mary Bumgarner of Hudson and three grandchildren, Kelsey Coffey and Kendal Coffey, both of Hudson and Jennifer Fairweather of Richmond, VA.  A celebration of Mr. Coffey’s life will be held 5:00 PM Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church with Reverend Nicky Waters and Reverend Michael Gragg officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 7 until 9 PM at Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church.  Pallbearers will be: Bill Gragg, Dallas Gragg, Wayne Gragg, Albert McLean, Rick Eckard, Tim Hartley and honorary pallbearer, Terry Hartley.  The family respectfully requests memorials to be made to Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church for Missions, 2822 Poovey’s Chapel Church Road, Hudson, NC, 28638.  Online condolences may be sent to the Coffey Family at www.evansfuneralservice.com  Evans Funeral Service of Lenoir is serving the Coffey Family.
